Kanika Datta: The mass penetration of `luxury` goods
New Delhi January 10, 2008
The housing colony in which I live thoughtfully provides its residents with a thick yellow pages directory every month free of cost. This is a hugely useful B2C (business to customer) service. The publication make its revenues by getting local businesses — everything from local restaurants to contractors, beauty parlours, flower delivery services and water tankers — to advertise at extremely nominal rates.

A cursory look at the inserts for household repair services is interesting. The bulk of the advertisements came from score of single-proprietor businesses that rejoice in such names as "Pintoo Plumber", "Mohan Glass Works", "Jolly Electrician," "Husain Painter" and so on. Their insertions are basic: the name followed by a mobile number in large boxed type.

Pintoo plumber, who was summoned for a tank-cleaning operation, turned out to be a young man from Orissa who lived in one of nearby villages-turned-semi-cities that dot Delhi. He arrived on a recently acquired bicycle and was armed with the most rudimentary of tools. His most high-tech equipment was a battered mobile phone.

Yet this one phone had transformed his life. Before he set up his own business — such as it is — he worked for a malik who routinely cheated him and kept him in eternal penury. Now, thanks to capital investment in a mobile phone and a small expense on a pre-paid card and a yellow-page ad, this former agricultural labourer was able to become an entrepreneur in his own right.

Despite being mostly unlettered, this self-taught plumber had enough business sense to understand that there was no need to add an address or advertising hype to his yellow-page insertion. That would, he explained, reduce the print size and, therefore, his chances of rising above the clutter — the same challenge that gives marketing managers of consumer goods companies sleepless nights.

Like him, there are thousands of stories of how the telecom revolution, in which competition has driven down tariffs, has helped transform the lives of ordinary people in big and small ways. But this is not the sole point of this piece. The wider point is that telecom has demonstrated — despite the constant and fiercely competitive squabbles among the giant telecom operators — how even a small improvement in the enabling environment can make a difference to the livelihoods of ordinary people.

The combination of an improving and liberalised business environment and better purchasing power is amply demonstrated in the Auto Expo that opened in the capital yesterday. This year's event has been rescued from the somnolence that had descended on this annual event chiefly because of the launch of two small cars from two Indian auto giants — Tata Motors and Bajaj Auto.

Much has been said about Tata Motors' incredibly priced Rs 1 lakh small car. The point to note, however, is that the car is targeted not just at car-buyers but at helping two-wheeler owners drive up the value chain.

This is also patently the focus of Bajaj Auto's joint offering with Renault and Nissan. Rajiv Bajaj, chief of the country's second-largest two-wheeler maker, was careful to stress the mileage his car would promise, a key concern of any owner of a low-priced car.

Contrast this with the days when the only small car available was the Maruti 800, that too, produced by a cosseted government-owned company and attracting a long waiting list for those who declined the heavy charms of Hindustan Motors' Ambassador or Premier Automobiles' Padmini.

Contrast this, too, with auto-makers' moves when the industry was partially liberalised, first, in the eighties and later and more permanently in the nineties.

In those days, the initial launches were all so-called "luxury cars" aimed at the upper middle class and the rich — the doomed Standard 2000, built on a defunct Rover design, in the eighties and the equally ill-fated Daewoo Cielo.

Until the Matiz and Santro hit the scene and provided Maruti's small-car monopoly with some competition, this was largely the market on which car makers focused.

Today, the fact that many more auto companies — Ford, General Motors and Honda among them — are also thinking small now is a reflection of a new emerging purchasing power as more and more people reap the benefits of economic growth and are able to afford middle class lifestyles.

The remarkable point is that all this has been achieved in one of the world's worst enabling environments for business. Imagine how small, itinerant businessmen would grow if their access to power, water and petty approvals to set up organised businesses improved. And imagine what this would do to purchasing power in the world's second-most populous country.

The blinked socialist and communist Tamil bloggers started murmuring what they don’t understand about globalization and cell phone…..must ready to learn things instead putting aside has no meaning other than the meaning of BULLSHIT.

Globalization with Few Discontents?
In more than half the nations surveyed, at least six-in-ten respondents rate globalization as at least somewhat good. Yet in many countries, high percentages of respondents offered no opinion, indicating a lack of familiarity with the term. Far fewer respondents express negative feelings about globalization.
Support for globalization is strongest in Nigeria (90%), South Korea (84%) and Kenya (82%), followed closely by Indonesia (79%), Vietnam (79%) and China (76%). In all of these countries, governments and business elites have advocated globalization as a means of rapidly improving the standard of living.
Majorities in North America and Western Europe also have a positive view of globalization, but there also is significant opposition in these regions. Canadians favor globalization by three-to-one (69%-23%), but the margins are smaller in the U.S. and France. Six-in-ten French have a positive view of globalization, while 36% have a negative opinion - the largest percentage among wealthy countries.
Moreover, relatively few people in these nations - and in Eastern Europe and much of Latin America - say globalization is a very good thing; most say it is somewhat good. Only one-in-ten Americans and Canadians (10%, 11%) characterize globalization as a very good thing, and fewer Europeans agree. By comparison, nearly six-in-ten in Nigeria (58%), and more than four-in-ten in Kenya (46%), Uganda (44%) and South Africa (41%) see globalization as very good thing.
Opposition to globalization is most prevalent in Jordan, where 64% feel globalization is a bad thing. In addition, Argentines are evenly divided in their view of globalization (39% bad/35% good). In several countries, majorities or pluralities offered no opinion of globalization. Fully seven-in-ten in Uzbekistan, 57% in Pakistan, 55% in Russia, and 53% in Bulgaria expressed no opinion.
Young People More Likely To Favor Globalization
Despite television images of youthful anti-globalization protestors, in most Western European and Latin American nations, younger citizens are more positive about globalization than older ones. In France, for instance, seven-in-ten (72%) of those below age 30 say globalization is a good thing, while three-in-ten (28%) have a negative view. Among French respondents age 50 and older, fewer (58%) think globalization is good for France, while 35% say it is bad.
This pattern is apparent in Latin America as well. Younger Peruvians are much more likely than their elders to view globalization favorably (63% under 30/36% 50 and older). Nearly half of younger Bolivians and Mexicans agree, compared with only a third of those their parents' age.
Concerns Over Modern Life - Its Pace…
Despite the popular support for swifter communications and increasing international commerce, people are not entirely comfortable with the economic, technological and cultural change going on all around them. Roughly half of Americans, British, French and Germans criticize the pace of modern life. Italians are even more negative; six-in-ten (62%) dislike the pace of life today. Among people in major industrial nations, only the Japanese (63%) say they are content with the pace of life.
By contrast, people in the developing world have generally embraced the modern lifestyle. Throughout most of Africa and Asia - and to a lesser extent in the Middle East/Conflict Area - people generally say they like the pace of life today. In Nigeria, Lebanon and Indonesia, overwhelming majorities (85%) find the modern lifestyle appealing. However, it is notable that in some relatively globalized developing economies - such as South Africa, Egypt and Jordan - majorities say they do not like the pace of life today.
There is a clear generational divide on this issue. In France, Great Britain, Russia and Ukraine, people age 50 and older are about twice as likely to voice discomfort with the pace of life than are those under 30. This gap is biggest in Bulgaria: nearly six-in-ten (58%) Bulgarian respondents age 50 and older express concern that life is moving too fast; just one-in-ten (11%) of those under age 30 agree.
Attitudes on the pace of life are also strongly associated with views about modern technology. In nearly all countries, people who are critical of technological advances - especially television and the Internet - are more likely than others to be troubled by the pace of daily life.
And Fast Food
People's attitudes toward fast food capture their contrasting views about the pace of modern life. Majorities or pluralities in all wealthy nations take a negative view of convenience foods. German respondents, by better than six-to-one (63%-10%), think fast food has had a negative, not a positive, impact on daily life. Other Western Europeans are only somewhat less critical. By significant margins, Americans and Canadians agree that convenience meals have changed things for the worse. Clearly, the dividing line in opinion on fast food is economic, not geographic. South Koreans and the Japanese share the same dim view of meals on the run.
But throughout the developing world, most people have a favorable opinion of takeout food. More than seven-in-ten respondents in the Philippines, Vietnam and China like convenience food. Africans, on balance, are also positive, although in several countries significant minorities offered no opinion. People in Lebanon and Turkey were divided on the issue.
Traditional Ways Threatened
Overall, there is a widespread sense that the rapidly changing world represents a major threat to people’s traditional way of life. Africans are most likely to feel that their daily customs and traditions are under fire - more than eight-in-ten respondents in every African country express this concern. With only a handful of exceptions, this is also the prevailing view in other regions as well.
Public opinion in the United States is typical in this regard: Two-thirds of Americans say their way of life is being lost, while only three-in-ten people (29%) believe traditions remain strong. Sentiment that something is being lost in the modern world is shared by men and women and across all age groups.
The Philippines and Uzbekistan are the only countries surveyed in which majorities believe their traditional way of life is not threatened. That view is held by sizable minorities in three predominantly Muslim countries: Indonesia (48%), Jordan 44%) and Egypt (42%).
Too Much Commercialism?
The erosion of traditional ways is often blamed on commercialism and consumerism. Majorities in every Western European nation surveyed - and five of eight Latin American countries - agree that “consumerism and commercialism are a threat to our culture.”
More than six-in-ten French (63%) and Italians (64%) say these aspects of a market economy are a threat to their culture. Roughly half of Germans, British, Americans and Canadians agree. In Latin America, Bolivians (72%), Mexicans (64%) and Argentines (58%) are the most likely say consumerism is a threat to their culture.
This criticism is prevalent in many countries in other regions as well - but notably, not in the Middle East/Conflict Area. Majorities in Lebanon (64%), Uzbekistan (57%) and Jordan (54%) say commercialism is no threat to their culture. Pluralities in Turkey, Egypt and Pakistan agree.
Cell Phones Viewed Favorably
Still, people everywhere look quite favorably at how certain consumer goods - notably communications technologies - have affected their lives. Cell phones and the Internet are viewed universally as improving people’s lives.
Overwhelming majorities in nearly all of the 44 nations surveyed say cell phones have improved things for the better. This view is equally shared in poor countries in Africa and Asia where relatively few people actually own cell phones. For example, only about one-in-ten people in Bangladesh and Vietnam have a mobile telephone of their own, but more than nine-in-ten respondents in both countries say such phones have been a change for the better (96%, 92%).
The only significant dissent to this viewpoint comes in some wealthy nations, such as Japan, Canada and the United States, where cell phone use is widespread. The Japanese, in particular, are divided in their assessment- nearly one-in-two (49%) say mobile telephones have changed things for the better, while more than one-in-three (37%) believe they have made things worse. A third of Canadians and a quarter of Americans have a negative view of the advent of cell phones.

Only one other world is possible: communism. Destruction of world-capitalism is indispensable for it
Submitted by CommunistIntern... on November 16, 2006 - 20:23.
In the last few years, various social forums are being held in various parts of the world. This new culture of social forums is a new addition to various other attractive means of mystification of the working class and toiling masses of people all over the world. World capitalism is discovering and utilising ever newer means of mystification to contain the working class in the capitalist terrain. AISF is nothing but an important weapon of the ideological arsenal for bourgeois mystification. It is in perfect continuity with the ESF( European Social Forum) and the WSF( the World Social Forum). The AISF following in the footsteps of the other forums leaves no stone unturned to create the illusion of the possibility of another better world free from the intensifying problems of life and livelihood without destroying the decadent world capitalist system, the root cause of all problems endangering human existence today. It has made lofty promises and assertions. Let us try to find out the real essence of these and the real goal to which they aim to lead us to.
Their theories of Anti-Globalisation
Basis of anti-globalisation ideology is the denunciation of 'neo-liberal' policies adopted by the major powers since the 1980s, that have allegedly placed the entire world in the hands of great multinational companies, subordinating all human activities - agriculture, natural resources, education, culture, etc - to the pursuit of profit. The world is run by the dictatorship of the market. This dictatorship has at the same time stolen political power from democratically controlled states, and thus from the citizens of the world.
Thus the anti-globalisation lobby raises the battle-cry: 'our world is not for sale'. They demand that the law of the market must not guide political policies. Political decision-making must be restored to the citizens, and democracy must be defended and extended against all financial diktats.
Anti-Globalisation Obscures Experience of Marxism and Class Struggle…
In sum, the anti-globalisers have reinvented the wheel. It's ‘new’ revelations are: capitalist enterprises only exist to make profit! under capitalism, all goods are turned into commodities! The development of capitalism means the globalisation of exchange!
The workers' movement did not wait until the 1990s and the new wave of clever academics and radical thinkers who have come up with all this. All these ideas can be found in the Communist Manifesto, first published in 1848:
"The bourgeoisie has resolved personal worth into exchange value,(i.e. commodity) … It has converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage-labourer( i.e. a commodity owner whose only commodity is labour power)…
The need of a constantly expanding market for its products chases the bourgeoisie over the whole surface of the globe … To the great chagrin of reactionaries, it has drawn from under the feet of industry the national ground on which it stood."
Thus, the anti-globalisers’ claim to be offering a new analysis and a new alternative deliberately suppresses all reference to two centuries of struggles and of theoretical endeavours by the working class, aimed precisely at understanding the bases and tasks for a truly human future. And little wonder: the better world proposed by the anti-globalisers looks back longingly to the period between the 1930s and the 1970s, which for them represents a lesser evil compared to the liberalisation i.e. privatization/ denationalization/ less-state which got underway in the '80s. After all, that was the period of 'Keynesianism' in which the state was a more obvious actor on the economic stage.
…falsifies history….
However, before rushing to choose the years 1930-70 over the last two decades, it's worth recalling a few of the characteristics of that period.
Let's not forget that Keynesian policies the product of the unprecedented crisis of 1929 could only prove to be a temporally palliative but could never put an end to the inherent crisis of over production of capitalism. Let’s not forget the predominance of state control of the national economy in every developed country before during and after the second world war; let's not forget the catastrophic situation of the working class during the world war and for some years after it; let's not forget that since 1945 not a single day has passed without war and that this has resulted in the loss of tens of millions of lives. And finally, let's not forget that at the end of the 1960s, capitalism plunged into an economic crisis that led to the inexorable growth of unemployment. Nothing but state capitalism, the inevitable product of decadence , is responsible for all this.
This is the 'better world' the anti-globalisers look back on so fondly, the lost paradise destroyed by the multinationals!
…. and hides bourgeois nature of the state and the bankruptcy of capitalism
All this is the expression of a classic ideological manipulation by the bourgeoisie: to rehabilitate the state and make people believe that it can be used against the excesses of liberalism, or even serve as an alternative to the law of the market.
According to the anti-globalisers liberalization is the root cause of all problems afflicting humanity today. Thus in their view the proletarians only have to rally to the defence of the state and of public services: this is the real secret of this ‘radically new’ theory: state capitalism, whether in its Stalinist or democratic form.
But the state is not the guarantor of a better world, where riches are more equally distributed: it's the state which ruins this world, through war, through attacks on workers' wages, pensions and social benefits. What the anti-globalisers are saying to all those who ask questions about the socio economic malaise is this: the choice is between liberalism and state capitalism, when the real choice is between socialism or barbarism, destruction of capitalism with all its states, democratic or otherwise and multinationals or increasing imperialist war and terrorism.
The source of wars, of poverty, of unemployment, is not the so-called liberal revolution imposed by super-powerful multinationals, but the mortal crisis of decadent capitalism, which no policy of the bourgeoisie, whether Keynesianism--more state or liberalism—less state can resolve.
Sowing Illusions in Reformism in order to hide Necessity for Proletarian Revolution
Anti-globalisers claim to be anti-capitalist. But their anti capitalism is confined to reforming the ‘excesses’ of the present decadent system which are materially inevitable and they never call for the destruction of this decadent world system. Their prescription of self management is nothing but self exploitation of the working class in essence in today’s economic conditions. They hide shrewdly the hard reality of the wage labour relationship, production for market, profit , the root cause of all discrimination and socio economic and political problems and thus block the process of development of consciousness and urge for overthrowing the capitalist system through internationally centralised , united collective struggle of the international working class.
Internationalism in words that hides nationalism in reality
But the adherents of all sorts of social forums and anti-globalisers also claim to be internationalists. but the defence of the national interest of capital is an essence the basis of their internationalism and anti imperialism The only possible form of real internationalism is that of the working class, the only class which has the same interests in all countries. It is inseparable from the goal of overthrowing capitalism and abolishing frontiers, which is the precondition for any genuine liberation of humanity.
The internationalism of the anti-globalisers is just the respectable shop window behind which is hidden the real goods: the defence of one imperialist interest against another. One of the main unifying themes of the anti-globalisers is opposition not just to the multinationals or the World Trade Organisation, but to the USA. In reality they are all the product of the same decadent capitalist system. Anti-globalisers’ sole target is to denounce the US imperialism and domination of the world market, not imperialism and the world market as such. But in today’s society every country can not but be imperialist for survival. Their high sounding call for democracy hides the reality that it is the best form of capitalist dictatorship. This is also the powerful weapon of the imperialist rivals of the US bourgeoisie. Global justice campaigner George Monbiot was quite explicit about this when, in one of his many articles for The Guardian in Britain, he called for European unity and the extension of the Euro as a bulwark against US war-mongering. This is about as far away from internationalism as you can get - calling for resistance to one imperialism by binding yourself hand and foot to another. Anti globisers are also part and parcel of the pacifist deception to the march towards new imperialist wars.
Why has bourgeoisie invested so heavily in publicising anti-globalisation movement?
The strong grip the old socialist and communist parties once held over the working class has been weakened by its experience of left-wing governments and the collapse of Stalinism. Faced with the aggravation of attacks on the working class, the bourgeoisie has a real need for mystifications that can derail the tendency for workers to become conscious of the real situation. ‘Alternative worldism’ corresponds to this need, posing as a credible alternative to the old left. The demand for a ‘real left’ makes use of old recipes for a fairer capitalism so that its foundations are not put into question. More specifically, the bourgeoisie cannot afford to ignore the fact that within the proletariat more and more people are posing serious questions about the current state of the planet. This is why the anti-globalisation movement, with its ideology of local self-activity, of libertarianism and syndicalism, its mish-mash of a hundred different mini-causes and sub-movements, is so well placed to lead this embryonic questioning into the dead-end of inter-classism and bourgeois ideology.
By reheating the old mystifications of the left, the bourgeoisie is once again seeking to obscure the simple truth: the only alternative to the destruction of humanity by capitalism in decay is the proletarian revolution and the construction of a communist society. In particular, it needs to hide the fact that any serious proletarian movement will inevitably have to confront the very things that the anti-globalisation movement supports: the state, the left , the trade unions and democracy.
The working class must recognise the bourgeois nature of all social forums including the AISF and anti-globalisation ideology and see it for what it is: an obstacle to its authentic struggles to defend itself from the growing assaults of capitalism.

http://www.indianembassy.org/newsite/press_release/2007/Oct/14.asp

". For well over three decades after independence, India adopted a dirigiste model of economic development. The State was the principal driver of the economy and the economy itself remained closed to the rest of the world. In those thirty years, India’s GDP grew at an average rate of 3.5 per cent. I call those years the “lost decades”.

8. That model exacted a price. It also left a legacy that, to this day, remains a heavy burden. The socialist jargon had pervaded all walks of life and, especially, all economic activity. In the 1980s, first Indira Gandhi and, following her, Rajiv Gandhi made a brave effort to dismantle some pieces of the monstrous and rapacious structure that had been erected over the years. Rajiv Gandhi, in particular, challenged the people to think of the opportunities that lay ahead in the fields of information technology, communications, aviation, urban development, medicine and education. Politics stood in their way. Nevertheless, the new, though feeble, wind that was allowed to blow into the house lifted the annual growth rate to an average of 5.6 per cent in that decade."
