Jestus. Library of Congress Control No. 2009937472, ISBN 10:0-9822553-2-2, ISBN 13:978-0-9822553-2-2.

On my return path I had an impulse to visit my old pal, Rock Van. He had graduated as an engineer and worked for some years in a government department. He had a flair for languages. During his spare time he mastered German, French, Italian and Spanish. He had a working knowledge of half a dozen other languages too like Russian Arabic, Japanese, and Hindi etc. He fell so much in love with languages that he resigned as an engineer and took up a job as translator in a few high paying companies .A dragoman as he called himself. He landed up in a prestigious government department in that capacity. He took a second retirement and began working freelance. He spent most of his time at home, glued to the seat in front of a computer.

As I expected he was in. I rang the bell. His door opened within a minute and Rock Van stood, tall and smiling broadly.

“Welcome.”, he grinned. I stepped into his phrontistery. The computer was on. A pile of printouts lay by the keyboard. A quick glance told me it was in French.

“A doctoral thesis. I am translating it into English for someone.”, he explained.

Rock Van opened the fridge and brought back a big bottle of apple juice and two stainless steel tumblers. He was a strict teetotaler. And a vegan. Rock Van collected jokes as a hobby. He could reel off a joke on any subject. He was also an inexhaustible source of obscure trivia, and was peculiarly proud of that. He would dish out an unimaginable tit-bit and ask me ,“ How many know it?”

Rock set the ball rolling with his opening gambit.

“The name of Napoleon’s favorite horse was Desirée.”

“ I see”. I knew what was coming.

“Now how many know it?”, he asked.

“Rock, it is quite sufficient if you and I know it. Why bother about how many know it?”

He laughed, because that was my standard reply to his regular question.

“ Anyhow Napoleon is dead and Shakespeare is dead.”, I added and bit my tongue.

Give him the smallest opening and he will push a joke through it.

“ I asked ,how many know. Well apparently even some very famous people do not know about Shakespeare.”
I did not believe him. I raised my eyes. He began with a  straight face.
“There was this famous pugilist. He was the world champion for years. Nobody could beat him in the ring. The journalist interviewing him asked casually, ‘Do you know Shakespeare?’ The fellow replied. ‘Shakespeare ? I will punch  him out in the first round.”
Rock Van burst into laugher. I smiled. Fortunately he knew my allergy towards jokes and cut short his narration”.
=========================================================================
I went to meet Rock Van at his house for the regular monthly visit. I generally choose the time when his wife would be out to the office, so that we could chat freely. We indulged in our monthly quota of gossip and information update, as he called it.
“Goethe’s last words were,  ‘more light’. Many people feel inspired by those words. Actually the room in which he lay was dark and he wanted the blinds drawn. Now, how many people know it?”
Reluctantly I supplied my part of the catechism. “Rock, it is quite sufficient if you and I know it.” He chuckled in satisfaction.
Rock, needless to mention, was in front of his computer. He had opened two windows, one for his translation work (a German document) and in another window he was checking mail. He was carrying on the conversation with me too. I often wondered how he could pay attention to three things at a time. “Nothing to it.”, he had said, “I read novels while I am walking in the streets, you know.” (He claimed he could even do eight different things at a time – multitasking, he called it. Efficient time management, he had further explained. I have my own doubts about the first word, the adjective, I had replied.)”
======================================================================
”I entered the all too-familiar scene. Rock Van in silk pajamas, carrying on his love affair with the computer, two windows open on the monitor. Rock  banging off on the key board.
The familiar cup of coffee and his familiar greeting.
“The original name of Kirk Douglas was Issur Danielovitch Demsky. How many know it?”
“It is quite sufficient if you and I know it. Ok?”
He would never be satisfied if this ritual was not carried out. I said.
“I read the book Ivanhoe, by Sir Walter Scott. I liked it much.”
“Oh, that? ” he said, “ Yeah. I read it recently in 1960.”
“Recently ? In 1960? You call that recent?”
“Why not? It is still so fresh in my memory. You want me to quote a few lines out of the book?”
“No thanks. I believe you.”
He smiled happily. As with jokes, so with books. You name a book and he will quote sentences out of it. I think I said somewhere that when the mood is on him, he walks along the street (and across) reading a book. He says he holds the book slightly below the eye level so that he can have two views – of the book and of the traffic. Like the two windows on his computer, he had further clarified”.
